Identity and memory are the twin themes explored in an innovative public art installation at Salisbury Cathedral that combines photographs of tattoos, belonging to inmates at Erlestoke prison, and extracts of their writing. I was asked to photograph the prisoners on location by LLL Productions Artistic Director Mark Hewitt who developed the installation alongside exhibition designer Standard8.
I was understandable apprehensive going into the prison having never been in one before. Fortunately I was accompanied by reading consultant David Kendall who has led reading and writing workshops in prisons across the UK.
The installation will be open from 7 October - 5 November, 9am to 5pm.
